Scholar Profile

Barbara Smith earned a Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science from University of Florida in 2010 and then worked as a postdoctoral fellow for Dr. Paul Davenport in the University of Florida’s Department of Physiological Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Smith was awarded a K12 scholarship in January 2011 under the mentorship of Barry Byrne, MD, PhD. Currently, Dr. Smith is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy. Dr. Smith’s research interests are concentrated on respiratory muscle remodeling to facilitate recovery of ventilatory function. Specifically, Dr. Smith is examining whether inspiratory muscle strength training improves strength and breathing function, in children with mechanical ventilator dependence. Dr. Smith also maintains a strong interest in the role of respiratory muscle strengthening on breathing perception and dyspnea. Her long-term goal is to identify translational bridges between respiratory muscle rehabilitation, muscle remodeling, and the restoration of ventilatory function.
